Our Story
I am Sujata, the founder and designer of SaaRii. I grew up in Mumbai, India and moved to New York City to study fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
For over twenty years, I have been a part of the exciting and vibrant New York fashion industry, having designed apparel for a diverse portfolio of American brands. Now, I am excited to go back to my roots with SaaRii.
I have thoughtfully designed a small capsule collection of elegant and effortless styles that blend the soul of my vibrant South Asian culture with the spirit of my beloved New York City.
The Evolution of SaaRii
It just takes one tiny spark to light a fire.
In my case, it was one tiny chill. Last year, in October 2022, it was a chilly fall evening at a Diwali party, as we gathered outdoors to light the traditional diyas and fireworks. All of us wore our regular winter jackets to weather the cold, totally diminishing the look of our beautiful traditional clothing. That’s when I had the idea of designing coats and jackets that represented South Asian heritage. Inspired by my vision, I sketched and tech-packed excitedly to bring a collection to life.
The brand name “SaaRii” is a combination of the initials of my sons names, Savir and Rishi and a homage to the beautiful tradition of Saris. I designed these styles thoughtfully with a broader market in mind. My goal is for all ethnicities to fall in love with the rich heritage of Indian textiles through these timeless and enduring styles.
